Filming session 1

As I have already got past experience of filming sessions I was able to prepare effectively so Matt and I could get the most out the day. As last year there were more of us it was easier for us to go off task making our progress slow. This year however, there were only three of us involved in producing the music video meaning more could be done in a shorter period of time. In the time since last year I have learnt to drive so a larger range of places became apparent to us as they were easily accessible to us whereas last year we had to stay local restricting our location options.

Matt, Alfie and I arrived at the Hulme Hippodrome at twelve o'clock in order to optimise our day as we wanted to film as many shots as we could. We learnt this from last year as when it came to editing the footage we needed more shots for the opening sequence to flow correctly and so we had to re-shoot, we wanted to prevent this and not have to re-film any footage. We debriefed Alfie on the storyboard and explained our vision. It is important that Alfie understands what Matt and I are looking for in order to preforming the correct way.

Matt and I took it in turns filming different shots while Alfie preformed. As one was doing the filming the other took photographs of the other as evidence of what we have done. We can then use this evidence to show how we produced our music video. We both recorded different shot angles to provide alternative shots when editing.

Lip Syncing

Lip syncing is when an actor moves their lips in synchronisation with a pre-recorded soundtrack. Lip syncing is not just used in the music industry but it also used in film making and video games. When producing animated films the developers change the characters lip movement to match the dialogue. Similarly, it is used in video games when animating characters to create an immersive environment for the player. However, in Matt and I's music video we will be incorporating lip syncing for the purpose of covering our chosen song, "Firestarter" by Torre Florim. As neither of us have edited footage to include lip synchronization we will have to research different methods to find the most effective way to incorporate it. As a practice for lip syncing I have recorded myself singing to The Script "The Man Who Can't Be Moved". This will help me with the music video as I will be able to perfect the lip sync editing to produce an accurate music video.

Costume Analysis

Many famous indie-rock bands have developed over the years, including Oasis, The Arctic Monkeys and Mumford & Sons. These bands have been highly successful, using their brand and identity to help them sell records. These bands use their alternative, laid-back style to give the genre an identity.
Indie-rock bands often dress in a casual way, which is how many people in their target audience may also choose to dress. This helps them to fit in with their target audience, and also represents their background and history.

In the Arctic Monkeys music video for "Why do you only call me when you're high?" we can see the lead singer Alex Turner is dressed very casually wearing a leather jacket and jeans. The style is not extravagant like some bands such as The Killers is some of their music videos, "Spaceman" for example. Having this chaotic style is good for attracting an audience as it is unusual sparking a desire to watch the music video. However, it is not always the affective to have this style as the audience can not fully attach to the characters. It creates a barrier of unfamiliarity as the audience can not see them for who they are. This damages the chances of a rapport which is essential for the audience to understand and empathise with the lyrics.

In my music video I want to use a similar outfit for our main character to create a rapport. Our chosen character will wear jeans as this is a very common piece of clothing worn by most of the population and therefore relate to more people. However, the character will wear a leather jacket when performing on he stage at the theatre and a denim jacket when talking to Alice. Both jackets are typical over the rock genre, this convention will help our audience understand what genre this is. The character will also wear boots to demonstrate that he is more rustic then if he was wearing trainers.

Talent Release Form

As Matt and I are using a actor in our music video we need to gain permission to use him in our production. Below is the is the document to prove we have permission to use Alfie in our production. It is necessary to have this information as we will be using the footage in our  music video for our coursework.
