Filming session 3

With a minute to fill on my music video I decided to use slow motion to create a a longer clip. I wanted to use the lighter to demonstrate the fire however the flame was rather small and nothing to it. I wanted a larger more uncontrollable flame to represent the relationship between Alfie and Alice. To do this I had to pour lighter fluid over the lighter. I held the and sparked it in one had and with the other I filmed it in slow motion. I filmed a couple takes to ensure that I had sufficient footage.

Filming session 2

Matt Alfie Alice and I met up to film the last shots needed to finish our film. We wanted to create enigma in this scene so we decided to film at night using my car to produce the lighting. This worked successfully as there was enough light to see what was happening but not too much to destroy the mysterious aspect. Both Matt and I recorded different angles of the scene between Alfie and Alice to allow us to play around with the continuity.

Editing Session 3

In this editing session I uploaded the shots of me holding the lighter with the flame in slow motion. Once all three clips had uploaded to Final Cut Pro X I inserted them into the actual video to determine which shot fit best. The third clip of footage worked better with the other shots and so I used this on. As the shot was in slow-motion it was extremely long at one minute seven seconds therefore I had to use the blade tool to shorten the length to fit. After the shot was the correct length I had space to experiment with the shot. I wanted to amplify the fire flickering so I decided to put a filter over the footage. I initially used the monochrome filter to match the rest of my music video however the fire was not as effective. I then had the idea to use the blade tool to create small shots of the same footage to continue the smooth transition through the music video. On the very other shot I inserted a monochrome filter so it was going back and forth between colour and monochrome. This gave the impression that the shot itself was actually flickering mimicking the fire.

Magazine Analysis

Image result for indie rock magazine   Image result for indie rock magazineImage result for indie rock magazine

Just by looking at these three magazine covers we can see that Indie Rock is very focused on the artist and the band as a group. This can be seen throughout the magazines as the band want to convey that they are a collective, that nobody is more important then another showing the bond they have through the use of medium shots. This cohesion is important for the band as they want to reflect this onto their audience as their success would be nothing without them. This is consistent across all the front cover which demonstrates that this is a really important aspect of the genre and therefore Matt and I will use this when producing our own to conform with the stereotypes.

The font used by these magazine articles are very bold making a clear impression on the reader. This could demonstrate the values of the the band as it consumes a large proportion of the text cover. From this font size we can conclude that this is most likely to be the headline meaning the most important feature of this magazine is the band. This again shows how important the band as a whole is. The font is very basic, the block letters suggests that the band are also basic. The font reflects the band as they are normal people just like their audience. We can use this style of font in our own product to conform with the conventions of the genre.

Regarding the institutional information on the magazine article, it is the same as any article already. They all consist of a bar code, issue number, price and website which is an necessity for a cover of a article and therefore we will include all these when producing our own magazine. This will make our media product more realistic and believable as it uses the basic features that all magazines use.

Editing Session 2

After finishing the shots of Alfie in the theatre I then had to use the footage of Alfie and Alice together. I used the shots that I had previously uploaded in the last editing session. The first shot was of Alfie standing alone in the dark as we wanted to establish that he was waiting for Alice. To do this I implemented a long shot of Alfie and bladed it to fit with the lyrics and with the other shots prior. I then inserted the rest of the shots for this scene and bladed them correctly to make the music video smoother and improve the overall continuity. Once I had finished the scene of Alice handing Alfie the lighter the was a minute still left to fill. Matt and I decided to use the lighter to create shots of fire to match the lyrics of the song.

Magazine production ideas

I have looked at different software available to me on different platforms. On my phone I found an app call Union which allows me to photo-shop images. Having looked at tutorials I attempted to make my own creations using examples from other indie rock bands. Below as follows are images using the union app.

Rough Edit

This is the rough edit of mine and Matt's music video. We will carry out audience research to see what they like and dislike about it to improve.

Indie Rock digipak analysis

Image result for arctic monkeys digipak

This is the debut album from the Arctic Monkeys in 2006 and therefore they had to create something of interest to produce a positive name for themselves. The actual album name is 'Whatever people say I am, that exactly what I'm not'. This produces enigma surrounding the band as they are going against the conventions of indie rock sparking interest of the audience. It was important to portray the type of band they are so the audience can know the genre just based on the digipak. To convey indie rock the Arctic Monkeys opted for a monochrome look which gives it a rustic feel. The dark colour scheme demonstrates their style of song and challenges conventions. The fact that the colours are dark suggests that the songs are not about happy endings rather then the typical love story scenario. The man on the front cover represents how the Arctic Monkeys see themselves, as ordinary people just like their audience. This "working class" impression brings the band and the audience closer together and removes any barrier separating the two. This shows that they are genuine people has their success has not changed them as they are sticking to their roots and performing based on their passion not for money. This again creates a rapport between the audience and the band which is essential for an indie band. The man on the front cover is smoking which is typically a convention of indie rock as it demonstrates a "Bad boy" impression. This demonstrates clearly which genre the Arctic Monkeys are. However, the cigarettes could also demonstrate what they think of music the connection between cigarettes and music is that they can be addictive for the audience.

Image result for digipak green day pinterestThis album was released by a indie rock ban called Green Day in 2004 September 27th. From the front cover we can clearly see a hand holding grenade in the shape of a heart. This suggests that the band are against war and do not wish to become involved with violence. We see blood dripping down the hand which suggests there has been a war. We can decode that the band are against war as the actual album name is called "American Idiot" which reinforces how against Green Day are of war. The style of the images on the front cover are very cartoon-esque in-which we can interpret as the views of the band. That war itself is child-like and immature and so it should be replaced with making love, as represented by the love heart shaped grenade.
On the front over the disk we see a similar hand presumably the same holding a pin of a grenade. This demonstrates that the damage of war has already been done and continues to happen in the world. The fact that the pin is red suggests the bloodshed and horrors war has produced for countless soldiers serving their country. It is not uncommon for indie bands particularly rock to express their political interests which tend to focus on the working class population as this is the main target audience for this genre. By expressing their views, Green Day can influence many people to hopefully change the world for the better as they have a large fan base.
Image result for digipak green day pinyrestOn the back cover of the we see the pin has changed colour from red to white. The colour red suggests violence and anger which is how the band see war, however now the pin is white suggesting purity. This change in colour could be an example of we should be this rather then going to war, killing thousands of people. It is something we as an individual should attempt to be, pure and innocent not violent and blood thirsty.
