Evaluation 4

Before creating my music video I needed to understand what the conventions of the indie rock genre was to convey to the audience what genre my music video was. In order to find these conventions I researched popular bands like Arctic Monkeys and The Killers via YouTube. I looked at their music videos and by analysing what the conventions of their music video I could replicate this to make my music video just as successful. Not only did i use YouTube but I also looked at other websites who had previously analysed this genre to compare with my analysis. Once I had finished my research I compiled what I had found onto a website called Blogger. With this I can have all my research in one easy location if I need to refer to it later on in the course.

After the researched had been complete I needed to practise elements of my final production like filming and editing. Therefore, I had a look on the App Store on my phone for any useful editing applications to practise my technique for the real digipack and poster. I found an application called Union which allowed me to manipulate the picture to explore different possibilities. As I was new to the app I decided to look at tutorials online so I could use it most effectively in my favour. Once having watched online via YouTube how to use each tool I attempted to edit images which have been provided. I also needed to practise lip syncing editing as I have never done this, I did not perform it at AS so it was important to practise to ensure I correctly managed it to ensure a successful music video. To practise I recorded myself singing "The man who can't be moved" by The Script who are also in the indie rock genre making this relevant. Once recorded it uploaded the video to Final Cut Pro X where I could edit the lip syncing. I downloaded the song from the internet and inserted it into the editing software. When recording the blip syncing scene I had the song by the Script in the background to help me sing the correct words at the right time. This provided extremely beneficial when editing as The words had already aligned. From this I decided to have the song in the background when recording the final music video as it not only would it help Alfie when performing but also me when editing as all the words were aligned. However, after practising image manipulation and lip syncing I needed to rehearse filming as I have not in over a year. I took the opportunity to practise filming when my friends and I went to Wales Nefyn. From this trip I was able to capture beautiful shots by the coast on a cannon camera which I wanted to use when filming my actual music video as I was able to produce high quality images which would be extremely effective in my music video as I wanted to have a sharp contrast in colours and using a high quality cannon camera allowed me to do this most effectively.

During the stage of production I could not get hold of the cannon camera I had used in Wales to take high quality videos. Therefore, I had to use my phone which became the main piece of technology when filming. I used my iPhone X which was the best filming device I had available to me as it had a dual lens camera with a 12 megapixel display meaning I could film in 4K at 60FPS. With this quality of recording it was the same as the cannon camera I had used in Wales. However, using this camera made filming extremely easy to do. The phone is lightweight meaning I could film steady shots without it shaking creating a blurred video. The fact that it was my phone and so I knew how to wor the camera and I did not have to lug around a camera that I was not particularly familiar with. Not only was it easier to film with but also uploading the footage when complete was extremely quick. As we were using an Apple Mac to edit the footage as they were provided for us, transferring footage was seamless as both are Apple products making them compatible with one another.

When writing the evaluation tasks for my blog I used websites such as Piktochart, Powtoon and Prezi. All three websites allowed me to express my creativity as I was able to demonstrate the key knowledge needed but in a very visually pleasing way rather then producing a large chunk of text. This not only looks more professional but it also encourages the audience to read my evaluation questions as it visually captures you. Using Piktochart was incredibly easy as I have not only used it already in my AS evaluation but it is also extremely simple to produce something so effective. Powtoon is a website that I have never heard of and it was suggested to me by teachers to look into. This website allowed me to create a video presentation of my work. As I had not used it before I decided to look on YouTube for ways to get the most out of what I had available to me. I created a presentation that demonstrates my knowledge and understanding g of the question in an unconventional format to hopefully entice the audience.

The editing software provided by school was Final Cut Pro X which allows an amature producer such as myself the ability to create our vision. I used Final Cut Pro last year in my AS work however I was knew to the system and only used the basic features. This year I wanted to explore how much the software had to offer. I did however still use basic tools like blade and zoom to produce a rough edit of my music video but I wanted to improve my skills from last year. As a result I implemented different filters such as the monochrome filter to give my music video an alternative look. The indie genre is all about expressing yourself in new and unusual ways and the software Final Cut Pro X allowed me do do so. I not only used a monochrome filter but I also included a flash of light to signify a flash back has occurred. This flash of light is a convention when it comes to flashbacks and therefore helps the narrative of my music video progress as the audience understand my music video.
